Grand County police say a boy playing with matches on Sunday caused the fire. They say he started a brush fire at a campground that moved up the riverbank and destroyed Dewey Bridge.

The suspension bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1916 and was the state's longest bridge without supports in the Colorado River it crossed.

2007 BMW MOA Mileage Contest

Six current or former members of the club entered and finished the mileage contest sponsored by the BMW Motorcycle Owners of America.  This free contest begins in April and ends in October.  MOA members that send in the start and finish form listing mileage are entered and receive a pin for their participation.  In 2007 George Barnes of our club had the highest mileage of anyone in Colorado with 37413 miles.  Following George were Nick Greear (15565), Brian Benton (12004), Joe Branson (8432), Josh Casselberry (8364), and Jeff Smith (6382).  The mileage contest is one more reason to get out and ride.  It’s free and fun.  Entry forms are online at www.bmwmoa.org.

Minutes of the April 8, 2008 Business Meeting

Of the

BMW Riders of Western Colorado

President Daren Roybal called the meeting to order at 6:00 pm in the old diner at Grand Junction Harley Davidson.  There were 14 members present.  Daren reported that he had called all non-renewing members and three have renewed.  Non-renewing members will be purged from the membership list.

Treasurer’s Report: Monte Potter reported that the club has $2362.77 in the bank, and he had received a couple of dues payments and the only expense was the newsletter that cost $25 in February.  The only outstanding bill is $20 for the March Newsletter.  Sam gave Monte $120 for last year’s rally registrations received by Paypal.

Secretary Jeff Smith reported that the club has 37 members, and that seven members have ordered nametags.  He will order the nametags from The Trophy Case.  Jeff also mentioned that he will miss the next two meetings of the club as he will be traveling to Montana and then Alaska.  It was suggested that Milan Haase take minutes at these meetings.  Sam Kloberdanz reported that Scott the owner of GJ Harley will continue giving a club membership away to the purchaser of a new BMW motorcycle.

Old Business:

Brad Hoy and George Barnes reported on their plans for the first Western States Bonanza.  Sam will do a website for the Bonanza and link it to the club website.  George and Brad have developed a list of destinations in Western States and they will assign point values for each.  Participants will pay an entry fee of $75 and receive a T-Shirt, awards banquet on Sunday, as well as doughnuts and coffee at the start on Friday.  The event will be held Friday noon through Sunday noon on July 11-13, 2008.  It will start and finish at Grand Junction Harley Davidson, BMW, Buell.  It will open for pre-entries soon.  Entrants will receive a list of bonus destinations with point values 30 days prior to the event so they can plan their routes.  The rally will be scored on Sunday as riders return.  An awards ceremony will take place at a closing banquet.  George reported on insurance and noted that this event is viewed as a rally by the insurance company.  The bonanza will be open to all bikes and Harley riders and Goldwing clubs as well as other clubs will be contacted to participate.  Digital cameras will be allowed to document bonus locations and towels will be provided.  George will make 1000 miles in 24 hours Ironbutt certification part of this event if desired.  Contestants will leave an envelope with the club detailing their itinerary and planned route.  Participants are encouraged to plan several alternate routes in case of bad weather.  George and Brad will need club members to volunteer for various duties.  After discussion a motion was MSP for the club to sponsor and fund the Western States Bonanza July 11-13, 2008.

New Business:

Jeff will send the edited membership list to Sam for publishing on the website.

Mike the Headless Chicken festival is happening May 16-17, 2008 in Fruita.  The club is investigating the interest in a Bar-b-que at Monte and Nancy Potter’s house with The BMW Club of Colorado.

George Barnes suggested that the club Holiday party be held at a restaurant next year paid for by the club.

Rally Planning:

Terry Toner, Daren Roybal, Monte Potter, Orrin Beckner, Jeff Smith met on April 1, at Moody Valley Insurance about rally planning.

Gary Campbell and Elizabeth Waite will do rally registration.  Need to modify registration form to add emergency contact information for riders and a note to leave name on tent at campsite for identification if rider doesn’t return.

Robert Caruthers has a contract to hire Russ Chapman for music on Saturday Night.  The contract guarantees payment to Russ even if the event is cancelled.  Robert will get the rally stuff from Steve.

Monte Potter will continue to be the liaison with the Delta County Fairgrounds.  He will check about using outside food vendors, including the Lions club for breakfast Saturday morning.

Orrin is in charge of door prizes.  Terry will canvass members about who they have bought motorcycle accessories from and who we might solicit from.  Orrin has drafted a letter to solicit door prizes.

Jeff will do a 3 fold flyer for neighboring clubs and posting at M/C shops around the area. Jeff will send rally flyer to Sam for conversion and distribution as a .pdf file.  It may also be distributed to shops and other clubs by members in their travels.  Vendors are welcome at the Rally.  Rally ads are in this month’s BMW Owners News, and RA On the Level.

Terry and Sam Kloberdanz will do a Rally T-shirt.  Ideas include Club name and Color Weekend theme.

Daren is in charge of Friday dinner. Menu will include Chili, cheese, crackers, onions, jalapeños, soda, and water.  Some vegetarian chili may be required.

Monte and Terry will bring coolers and water and soda will be available for an unspecified donation.

Terry is working to arrange the Saturday Breakfast by the Lions club. Terry is arranging the catered dinner on Saturday night.

Jeff and Sue will provide DVD projector and screen for the Friday night movie.

George Barnes will give an Iron Butt Presentation on Friday night.

Daren will bring his truck and trailer for emergency use during the rally.

George will arrange for Rally insurance.

Need a ride chairman to write ride descriptions, Milan Haase and Ken Hill will coordinate GS rides. Coordinators for the long distance ride, and color rides to be determined.

Next Month’s meeting will be at Grand Junction Harley Davidson.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:17 pm.

Respectfully Submitted, Jeff Smith Secretary
